When they stop for the day and have to cover their work with plastic to keep the rain out, they nail the plastic in place using lath or similar cheap wood.  the next morning, if thee iwnd hasn't torn the pastic off in the meantime, they remove it.  Keep in mind, there aree no claws on masons' hammers, so the nails get banged out in some sloppy manner and fall all over the place.  At least the ones that they didn't spill the night before in putting up the plastic.

They also use nails to set their string lines so the courses align...or the string lines they ignore when supposedly aligning courses.
