Hello Richard:
A better place to pose this query is probably the speakup mailing list,
there are a few blind hams subscribed to it.
You can subscribe by visiting
http://speech.braille.uwo.ca/mailman/listinfo/speakup
Or, if you prefer you can subscribe via email by sending a message with only
the words subscribe speakup to.

First, I don't know if you can get a slackware-based version of the irlp cd
package created by David Camryn as the last time I did any reading on this
topic all the cd's were using a condensed version of the Red Hat
distribution.
Second, the only advantage to having speakup on this box which your irlp
link is running on is for its use during setup and when small modifications
are required, personally I wouldn't bother the aditional expense of a speech
synthesizer, I'd probably see if you could borrow some eyes to help with
initial setup and then for any other modifications I'd use ssh or telnet to
connect to the box via its internal ip address on your network.

Good luck and 73.

If I can be of further assistance, feel free to call, email or msn, my
contact details are in my signature below.

Subject: irlp system operators, linux and other queries

HI folks,

For those of you who are sysops for irlp systems I'm interested in
knowing if you're running the slackware distribution of linux using
speakup.

IF not curious what you're using for system accesss and how it's
working for you.

Am lookihng at the possibilities of an irlp node for the NEw Orleans
area where I might have to be sysop and the problems and solutions
you've found.

Email me offlist if you feel it would be helpful.
