If you want to backup your registry, there is a better tool than NTBACKUP.
It is ERUNT.EXE and here are a couple of links for info on the utility:
http://www.pcug.org.au/~boesen/ERUNT/ERUNT.htm
http://www.winxptutor.com/regback.htm
To backup the other files related to this, you might want to us NTBACKUP
(just as you had already started) and select the WINDOWS and "Documents and
Settings" folders as what you want to backup. You do not need to select a
new job. Jobs are a way to automate your tasks - don't worry about it till
you get more used to using NTBACKUP.
I generally don't use the wizard, and it appears that you too bypassed it.
Give it a try and let us know if you still need more help.
One important hint for doing backups. Never replace an existing backup -
create a new backup instead. This way you have a good backup even if the
current backup operation fails. If you were to overwrite your existing
backup, and your system failed during the backup, your system is toast and
your old backup is also lost!

I did the following, in an effort to back up the XP Pro registry and
associated files, but have repeatedly failed at New. What to do, please?
1 .Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System
Tools, and then click Backup. The Backup or Restore Wizard starts.
2. Click Advanced Mode.
3. Click the Backup tab.
4. On the Job menu, click New
