Thank you very much for the prompt replies, over 20 responses!

The answers varied quite a bit. I'll give a quick summary...

A dietician on the list said there is no scientific evidence for shampoo
causing problems. (Is this because it has not been studied or is it
because there are no results indicating the reactions came from gluten
in the hair products?)

Several people have no problems and warned that the only way it could
cause a problem is through swallowing, entering the eyes or open wounds.

Other people have variable symptoms such as itchy scalp, back and hand;
scabs on scalp, back of neck and hairline; rash and swollen eyes;
blisters and itchiness; trigger for osteoarthritis; folliculitis
(pimples in hair follicles); and some even get the usual gluten
ingestion symptoms.

A couple of people don't know if there are any reactions, someone else
said it would be an allergic reaction not a gluten reaction and several
people think it should only affect sufferers of DH.

Some other people recommended gluten free products: Avalon Tea Tree Mint
shampoo, Shikai Everyday shampoo and conditioner and Mastey products. I
have used Aveda products in the past without problems and they often
contain wheat germ oil, someone else also said she used Aveda and had no
trouble.

That's about it. Thanks again for the information.
Gillian
