I did not notice a temperature jump like below, but I DO have an
active cooling "controller chipset" fan on my MB.
Seeing the computer freeze while booted directly into the BIOS
lead me to look for problems NOT related to WindowsXP...

Getting a new fan (and switching to ball bearings along the way)
fixed things perfectly for over a year and counting...
