notebook hard drives

I have a Gateway notebook that is just out of the warranty and the hard
drive seems to have gone bad. I looked around for a replacement and see that
most are advertised with the make of the computer that it is for. My
question is, are notebook hard drives standard, or do I have to buy one that
will work on this model Gateway?
