Well, the firewall was not enabled, so that wasn't the problem. However, I
moved the new computer to a different location in the house and it now pings
in both directions. I don't see why the location would make a difference
one way and not the other, but there you have it!
Anyway, thanks for the help from everybody (I doubt if I would have thought
about the firewall since I don't use it) and maybe my experience will
provide a clue to someone else with this problem.
