Thanks for your input. I uninstalled COM 4 and I can now connect.
I would expect since the modem is on COM 3 that COM 3 would need to be
installed. In laymen's terms, can you offer a brief explanation...my
education continues.

In case you are not aware of this, but COM 1 and COM 3 share the same IRQ
(4), and COM 2 and COM 4 share IRQ 3. Therefore, you cannot operate COM 1
and COM 3 at the same time, nor can you run COM 2 and COM 4 concurrently. I
noted that you did not mention COM 2. Since it share IRQ with COM 4, the
absence of COM 2 in your list may be an indicator of a problem.
Looking at this from a somewhat different perspective - what do you want to
do with the COM ports? Since you have a modem on COM 3, your COM 1 should
NOT be enabled unless you intend to use it only when the modem is not in
use.
