If we're heading into energy descent (I think we are), this process will
happen even faster.

I've seen estimates of the Earth's population at 5 million for
pre-agriculture.  I think the Earth could
support 500 million humans, without fossil fuels, but that's about the
limit.  You and I don't have to kill
off the milliards, it will happen regardless of our actions to prevent it.
