passageros.

In Grande Britannia le electrification era
accompaniate
per un expansion rapide de municipalisation. Le
grande profitos era utilisate pro subsidiar le
reduction del impostos local. Ma in le parve urbes
e le retes semi-rural, le rendimentos era basse
e le profitos precari.

Hic, circa 1903, le introduction del autobus era
un factor significante. Le nove vehiculo non era
multo attractive. Technicamente insecur, ruitose,

In consequentia, servicios de autobus

comenciava

Totevia, le situation era differente in altere partes
de Europa. In Belgica, in Nederlanda, in Germania

e politic produceva un effecto differente in varie
paises.

The Autobus:

The commercial success of the electric tram was
not universal. In cities, the high costs of
construction were easily compensated for by the
low costs of operation and by the large profits
generated through intense use by large numbers of
passengers.

In Great Britain electrification went hand in hand
with the rapid expansion of municipalization. The
large profits were used to subsidize the reduction
of local taxes. But in small cities and in semi-rural
networks, costs of operation made profits very
precarious.

Here, around 1903, the introduction of the bus was
a significant factor. The new vehicle was not very
attractive. Technically insecure, noisy,
uncomfortable, costly to operate, it did not play
an important role in urban transport.

In rural areas, however, the autobus was a useful
innovation because of its low capital costs. A
tram line needs frequent service to be profitable,
but rural service can be provided profitably every
sixty minutes with two buses. As a result, bus
services spread out throughout rural areas, ending
the boring isolation of rural life.

In Great Britain, after 1920, buses started to compete
with great success against the weaker tram networks,
whose profits were marginal. The unfortunate tram
companies had no possibility of success. Their
trams were no longer new, but the companies did
not have any money for replacement or modernization.
Their single-track lines did not allow for rapid
operation. And providing two-track lines was
impossible because of the cost.

Bus technology, however, had matured. Buses were
more comfortable because of the introduction of
pneumatic tires and cheaper to run because of the
introduction of diesel engines in the 1930s.

Still, things were different in other parts of Europe.

In Belgium, in Holland, in Germany (but not in France)
rural tram lines flourished until the 1950s.

In Switzerland, Austria, and the East European
countries, most of these lines exist even today.
Without doubt, a combination of economic and political
factors produced a different effect in different
countries.
