Well,  it was a suggestion,  what if you hit the function key and then the
moni key on the side to open the squelch, maybe the attinuater got turned on
by mistake, if the signals are low enough that might do it, or,  or,  I just
thought of something,  are you absolutely sure it's still in FM?  that would
do that too if you hit function key then 2, it will go to a different mode
each time, the FM static is noticeably different form all the others, it
almost sounds fake when you hit the moni button after changing modes,  did
you check that? each time you change modes you have to hit the function key,
then 2, each change,  check that.
