Thanks, Tom:

I have that cable with a circilar 9-pin connector on one end and the 25-pin
male on the other.  When I bring up the communications software that came
with windows, it posts a note that tells me I may need a MODEM.

The problem started when I let a guy take a MODEM out of my computer because
I have DSL>

Maybe I need to study the communications software protocol.
