This was posted on the Purington (various spellings) list. My husband's
father's family were connected to the Purington's. Ruth
The first brick was manufactured in the
Galesburg area in 1849 by Henry Grosscup,
a German stone mason. D. V. Purington and
W. S. Purington purchased the land in 1890
and by 1930 sixty miles of brick streets were
laid in Galesburg. The U.S. government
selected Purington Pavers to pave the streets
of the city of Panama City when building the
Panama Canal. The bricks were dispersed
around the world to places such as Chicago,
Deadwood, SD, the Bazaar in Bombay, India,
and Paris, France. The Purington Brick Co.
was once the largest producer of brick pavers
in the world with 800 workers producing
150,000 bricks a day. Asphalt became the
favored roadway covering and the factory
closed in 1974.
Although there are many different pavers they
are generally 9?? x 4?? x 3.5?? and weigh 9lbs.
Gavin Historical Bricks has brought the old
brickyard back to life. Historical Bricks is
now reclaiming brick from the interior kiln
walls and staging areas of the Purington
Brickyard. n
