Josephus Daniels, founder of The News & Observer in Raleigh, NC, was a
political bigwig in the days when newspapers were blatantly political.
His reward was service as Secretary of the Navy under Wilson during WWI.

After the war, the property his house was on was declared a naval base
(supposedly the smallest naval base in the country) so he could mount a
very large gun in the front yard. It still resides there, though the
property is now a Masonic Temple.

There are no navigable waters in Raleigh. Especially for a boat that gun
would fit.
