Heidi,

It's nice to hear from you. There must be a lot more 'assholes and elbows' going on in the "Seat Belts Fastened? state than anybody realized, but then again, there can't be much else to do there.

But enough literary chitchat. The scourge of glass block, which is way down there on the same level as vinyl siding, is the cockaroach of building products, and must be stamped out, disallowed, prevented, discouraged, not permitted and otherwise eradicated with all means and vigor possible. You, in your capacity as a primary guardian of the Public and Our Historic Patrimony must not relax your guard against it any more than an epidemiologist would allow people to contract polio or TB, even if they wanted these diseases.

Glass block is bad. It is ugly. It is evil, taking up precious space in masonry openings which should be filled with decent building materials and real windows.

The only possible circumstances under which glass block should even be considered for use would be to replace original glass block in Art Deco or 1950's buildings, but even then no innocent passersby should be subjected to seeing it from a public thoroughfare, and it should be screened from the view of unfortunate neighbors.

Go forth and sin no more.

Love and kisses,

Ralph
