Hi Folks,

Arrowhead Mills Maple Buckwheat Flakes Cereal is clearly labeled "Wheat
Free--Made with Non-Gluten Ingredients" on the front panel.  I bought a box
and had a reaction to the cereal, even though I have eaten buckwheat in
pancakes and have had no reaction to it.  (I almost always call producers,
but did not think I had to given the label of non-gluten ingredients.)

I called Arrowhead Mills.  The woman I talked to said that the label "no
gluten ingredients" did not mean it was gluten free.  She indicated that
Arrowhead Mills knew that there was gluten contamination in the cereal
because they process other grain in the same place.

I pointed out that people who were concerned about gluten are affected by
even very small amounts and if Arrowhead Mills knew there was contamination
in their cereal, they should not say it was made with non-gluten
ingredients.  After all, if there is contamination, the ingredients are not
"non-gluten" by the time they are packaged.

This labeling is like advertising a candy as being made without peanuts
when the producer knows that the candy is contaminated from peanuts being
processed in the same facility.  It shows, once again, that most people are
unaware of the seriousness of GI/celiac.  Even so, this approach to
marketing  seems very misleading (at best).  If anyone wants to check it
out or discuss it with Arrowhead Mills, here's the information:
