Yes, it works.
I have a new USB 2 scanner connected to a USB 1 port on my four year old pc.
That's backward compatibility!
My new scanner is awaiting its new friend, a new pc with 6 or 8 USB 2 ports,
which will arrive tomorrow! With both scanner and host using USB 2 I believe
scanning will be much more rapid, especially when scanning at high
resolutions.
