Dear Keith,
I enjoyed reading your post. It really got me thinking about the wider
issues surrounding the Paleodiet.
I couldn’t resist using your five aspects of the human situation as a
chance to consider how many of them I was fulfilling.
>1. Paleo thoughtways (there were no Paleolithic christians and probably
no atheists)
I don’t follow any organised religion, and I’m not an atheist. I’m also
apolitical. This simplifies my cerebral activity a lot ;-)
>2. Paleo food (there were no Paleolithic out-of-season fruits eaten)
I’m too poor to get fixated on trying to replicate the Paleodiet. What’s
working for me is following the basic rules.
3. Paleo activity (including sleep) patterns (there were no Paleolithic
chairs)
I go to sleep when the sun goes down and get up when it rises.
4. Paleo physical environment (there was no Paleolithic industrial
pollution)
There are not factories on my island. The air is relatively pure.
5. Paleo social environment (there were no Paleolithic employees or ways
of communicating other than face-to-face).
I don’t work: I’m a hermit ;-)
>Paleofood is great, and I've eaten Paleo almost completely for 2 1/2
>years
>(cheese and wine have made up about 5% of my calories over the past >year;
Cheese; don’t talk to me about cheese. I *love* it in all it’s infinite
variety, but will treat myself occasionally once I’ve been Paleo for a few
months.
Wine I can do without, but a gluten-free beer might serve to cheer now and
again. I had no idea that there was any gluten in beers and lagers, but
the celiac sites say there is. I wonder if the new gluten-free beers will
be any good taste-wise?
>I like to think of
>paleofood as being about one fifth of the paleo way.
I’d like to go two fifths. I do a lot of cycling, walking, rock scrambling
and some swimming, all out on our beautiful coastline. I do weight
training at home in an effort to make my muscles above my waist match
those below. However, I don’t really know what I’m doing with the
dumbbells and I’d like to keep my exercises as Paleo as possible.
Could you suggest which upper body exercises are best? Books or websites
would do. I’ve ordered the Art de Vany book from my library, but it can
take many weeks to come through.
I know that Paleos didn’t ride bikes, but I’m addicted to mine, and it’s
my only means of transport.
Is this the place to ask about Paleo exercises, or should I post this
query to the Evolutionary Fitness list?
