Helen,
I don't think that your reasoning is far fetched at all reguarding what
should be included in adultery.  I'm not saying that i would push a
person to get a divorce who is in a situation in which drugs or alcohol
are involved, but I wouldn't condemn the person if they did choose to get
a divorce either.  When a person chooses to abuse mind altering
substances  they are already breaking the marriage vows by putting
him or herself first and not following the pattern that Paul layed out
for marriage in Eph. 5:22-32.  It is up to the spouse to pray and seek
God's will for a response in that situation.
