I am not sure what your question is. If all you want is to transmit the
serial port information from one computer to another, then the question is
"how far is it to go"? The limit for RS232 is about 100 feet or so. For
longer runs you would need some other transmission medium and protocol.
RS422 allows for several hundred feet (don't remember exactly how far). For
very long distance transmission you could use a phone line with a modem.
Is it safe to assume that you have the appropriate software on each computer
to handle the data stream? In other words, does your software recognize a
serial port (COM1 or COM2) interface?

I have updating RS232 data coming out of a DB9 port that I want to get to my
computer's DB9 port or just to my computer. My research has produced a
device or system that will take the data, convert the data to use an
ethernet network, and then ether present the data by software to the
computer from the ethernet or remove the data from the ethernet and give the
data back by a DB9 port. This DB9 port could then be plugged into the
computer's DB9 port to view the data. This system cost from $400 to $700.
I'm asking for other suggestions that you may have seen or used that will
allow me to transport my RS232 data from one location to another.
