When the computer is off unplug the drive from the usb port. Fire up, then go to device manager to see if it shows under drives. If not, look under USB (last category). You may see a usb device with a yellow exclamation. If so, highlight and click remove, then OK when it warns you. Shut down, check the drive connection inside the drive, make sure the USB cable is plugged in on both ends and fire up again. XP should see it and install it. If it is brand new and has never been formatted you will need to go to control panel/Administrative services/computer management/disk management. You can format the drive from disk management. It shows all your drives, so make sure you choose the correct drive to format.
