I assume you have tried the basics...
The first thing I would try is to run it on another computer, and see if it
makes a difference. Probably not...but you won't know unless you try.
Can you image it in DOS? If Drive Image or Ghost works then maybe you can
extract the files to another folder.

Have you tried Maxtor's PowerMax utilities, to make repairs?

The only free ones I have ever come across across are light versions, that
will only allow the recovery of a few files, like 5 or 10 files. For
example, when Ontrack owned System Suite, version four, they included a
recovery program that would allow you to recover 5 files at a time. They
also sold a PRO version for full recovery. Ontrack's Easy Recovery version
6.x. However, once Ontrack sold the software to VCOM the only recovery
utility in SystemSuite 5.0 is a link to Ontrack's professional recovery center.
