Using the Windows 98 Boot Disk, start your machine as you normally would
with the disk in the floppy drive. When you get to the "A" prompt, type
"FDISK" and follow the instructions on screen. What you want to do is
completely remove or delete the current active partition, restart the
machine and enter "FDISK" again and set the partition (s) you want. After
this process, you will have to start your computer once again. When you get
to the "A" Prompt, format the drive or if you are going to install an
Operating System, starting the install process will let the program format
the drive. Reset the Boot Up sequence in the BIOS so the CD boots first.
When you restart the machine it will go into the install mode and you're off
and running. Either way this should work.
One article that may be of help to you is located in the Microsoft Knowledge
Base and this link should take you there. It deals with the FDISK utility
and how to use it... I keep getting an error message when I try to drag it
so we will try doing it this way instead... http://support.microsoft.com/
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 255867
Cut and past the numbers and when you get to the articles, scroll down to
"How to Use the FDISK Tool and the Format Tool to Partition or Repartition a
Hard Disk"
Unless your system and or BIOS are really old, FDISK should work for you...

Subject: [PCBUILD] Hard Drive Format
I just replaced my hard drive and attempted to format it using the Win98
startup disk. It formated only 8gb of a 20gb hard drive. The computer was
replaced with the same size HD. Can someone suggest how I can get the entire
drive to format. I am using Win98sSE. The HD did not have any disk with it.
