Depends on the type of cookie and the type of site, Matt. Any time you log
into a site with a password, they store a cookie on your machine with your
password then if you click "Remember me" so that you don't have to re-enter
your password every time, they look for that cookie and log you in
automatically.
Some of them are ads and will track what kind of sites you go to and send
you ads and pop-ups based on what you are interested in based on the sites
you visit.
But some of them are nasty ads that you don't want and send you ads for
nasty stuff you don't want. There's one ad that really torques me. It's
for a tiny wireless camera and has this beautiful woman in a seductive pose
and a big X on the ad which really has nothing to do with anything. There
is nothing good I can think of that you'd use such a camera for, and it
gives you the feeling that it's for perverts who are filming women without
their knowledge (a big porn business these days). The problem is, this
sick-o web ad is on virtually any search engine you use sooner or later. So
they send you a cookie and unless you delete it they're gathering info on
you and sending you pop-up ads. I just hate the idea of strange looking ads
coming up on legitimate sites and making it look like you're doing something
perverted.
The one thing I haven't figured out is that when you clear all cookies in
Internet Explorer, those cookies with passwords for important sites are
still there, which I'm grateful for, but don't understand how. Anybody know
that?
Paul
