I am glad that Cingular is at least offering an option where the cost of the
software can be waived if you sign a 2 year agreement. It's not the best
one, but at least it is an option.
And contrary to what a certain member of this list thinks, we are not asking
for things to be handed to us just because we are blind. John Miller put it
well. If the software were about $50.00 more that might be reasonable. But
if it brings the cost of the phone to $500.00 or so that's unreasonable to
fork over that kind of money for something the sighted get free as part of
the package. There is supposed to be an A.D.A. that is supposed to insure
that whenever possible our needs are taken into account, but it has done
little to help the blind. Sometimes in order to level the playing field
accommodations must be made. As has been proven the technology is here for
that to be done; it's just that the companies are ignoring both it and the
law and are getting away with it largely as Rich said because of the 2
national organizations of the blind who aren't doing much of anything for
us.
As for me, I am pretty happy with the Sanyo 4700 I have and I will probably
wait until Verizon comes out with their version of a speaking phone. But
for those who want to wait a few more years until the price comes down you
are risking that the phone won't be available by then. Sprint has already
discontinued the Audiovox 4090 which had some speaking features and was
marketed as a direct result of Bonnie O'day's complaint to the F.C.C.
concerning inaccessible cell phones. 73.
