I'd make a back-up on some other media (different HD, etc)
and then try the Maxtor (non-destructive) utilities to test the drive.
FWIW: I got a "bad" install of a program way back when 8.4G
drives first came out and it made the drive bang a lot...
I mentioned the size since I am still using that drive (somewhere)
and the problem went with the program "clean-up"...
