In addition to the comments that Rick made in reference to " Starting with
simple stuff", I would like to add the following:

What changed? One can assume the computer was working fine up to a certain
point then it stopped.

Possible causes:

The drive ribbon is not seated securely and there is no signal to the board,
the power supply may be failing and the connection to the drive has no
electrical power, the drive may have been accidentally formatted partially
or completely, the disk developed bad sectors and the space for the MBR
(Master Boot Record) is defective or the drive motor is frozen which means
the drive will have to be replaced.

I think this covers some but not all of the possible causes. Trying to
diagnose this problem without having the system in front of us is only
guessing but it does give you some areas to check and a place to start.
