The "protection" the router will offer the rest of your network is
extremely superficial, but it may be sufficient for your immediate needs.
Users on the new 192.x.x.x subnet will be able to make connections to
machines on your 172.x.x.x network, but the reverse will not be true if NAT
is enabled on the router. They won't, however, be able to listen in on
traffic between 172.x.x.x machines, and probably won't even know your other
machines are on that range, so they're unlikely to *find* any machines to
connect to.
In this configuration, traffic from the 192.x.x.x subnet is going to cross
some part of the 172.x.x.x network to get to your Internet gateway.
Hopefully, that's one of the things that next year's budget will fix.
