Comrades:
A friend had asked me whether the Jola language and the Karoninka
language are the same. My reply to him was that there are totally different.
The late Fa Ansumana Sambou of Faraba Banta was a Karoninka and
not a Jola. Thus, the Sambous of Faraba Banta are of the Karoninka
origin. As a matter of fact, when Fa Ansumana Sambou died, some
of his relatives moved to Serra Kunda.
Thus, one can categorically say that most Sambous are either
Karoninka or Mandinka. Why? Because I know of some Sambous
in Jarra who are Mandinkas. There is no truth of a Sambou being
a Jola.
Naphiyo,
Comrade ML Jassey-Conteh
