I think it'd be a good idea to learn code, even if it's five words a minute.
When I was 12 and went for the tech lite, I was releived I didn't have to
then, until I heard an episode of newsline where someone couldn't breathe
and used either the PTT or tone pad to ask for help in cw. Then I was in
high school, and didn't have time to study code, as I had to study math,
social studies, and all the other things, but I think it'd be worth it, as
all the mikes and TNC's may not be effective when you need them the most,
but cw can work, but only if you know it.
