It depends...

I always left my system on 24/7 except for occasional reboots (installs)
until last year.  I had a power-supply fan stop working.  I didn't realize
until the case became very hot <duh>.  Replaced PS, but  hard drive
erratic.  Replaced hard drive.  Still problems, figure it's the mobo.
Brand new system:  turn off every night, haven't even put the side back on
so I can "monitor" the innards.

XP starts up quickly so no problem there.

I have two old systems, 166 MHz with NT4server, that have be up for months
and months and months that have never had any problems.  I do leave the
monitors off until needed.
