The last thing that I would suspect is your hard drive. It is most likely a
cabling issue. Try re-seating the ribbon cable, or even replacing it. If
you continue to have problems, look to the controller, particular if it is
a PCI controller, like a Promise controller, or even a IRQ conflict. It
could also be a timing issue with your BIOS. See if there is a hard drive
detection delay you can enable in the BIOS.
