I was thinking along the lines of improper workgroup names until I saw the
part about the pings. From there, it looks like you may have the XP
firewall running. You should check in to that. I don't have the
information on how to do it in front of me, but look for "firewall" in the
Windows Help.
Another possibility is that you may have a 3rd party firewall running.
Temporarily disable any firewalls on all machines and then try the pings
again to see what happens. If you can ping both ways successfully, then
you're on the right track and should refer to the firewall documentation on
how to allow the machines to play nice together.
