I recall a few years ago here in Colorado there was an accident where a
livestock transport truck overturned and a number of horses were either killed
or injured. The story went on to explain that the horses were on their way to
be slaughtered for their meat which was bound for Japan. If I remember
correctly, the horses were also old and at the end of their useful lives.
(Whatever happened to the proverbial "glue
factory"?) I can't imagine that meat
would taste very good by most standards, but apparently it has some appeal in
other cultures.
There was a fair amount of indignation expressed over the thought that horses
were to be slaughtered for food and more than a
little disgust that the Japanese
would actually eat the stuff. I had to laugh at the time at this attitude. We
see similar attitudes in regard to dog meat... but maybe we'd better not go
there.
