A common concern that people raise is what to do to diagnose Celiac
disease if the person has been on a gluten free diet. About 20% of the
celiacs that come to me in the office are people that want to know if
they really have celiac after having been on a gluten free diet.
A great service celiac patients can do for people who are thinking
about a gluten free diet or are in the middle of an empiric diet is to
encourage people to get diagnosed with blood testing and often an
endoscopy with biopsies. As a celiac patient people may come to you
because of your knowledge about the diet. Encouraging diagnosis up
front can spare a lot of people the problems of going back on gluten
and the confusion that results in these situations.
