I recently built an Athlon XP system. I used a FIC AU13 motherboard, but
it had a similar odd spacing of the RAM slots. The manual identified the
slot that was separate from the other two as "slot 1", so that's where I
placed my initial stick of RAM, and it's working fine. I don't know why
there is the separation, but I'd expect the reason to apply similarly across
all of the motherboard manufacturers.
