Two thoughts:-
The bread people ate was not the same as what moden people call bread;
milling was different, yeast was different, more thoroughly fermented,
much less gluten content, possible other differences.
In olden times the word "bread" was often used to mean food, and was
used that way, although AFAIK not exclusively. Beware the trickiness of
the English language.
