Hi Fred,

I have done it in the past using a tuning aid which peaks at high pitch for
maximum output.  Here is how I have done it.  Tune up until you are fully
tuned and loaded.  Then, applying power, turn the ALC control first all the
way open so there is absolutely no reduction in power according to your
tuning aid.  Then, start turning it the other way until you note a slight
reduction in the tone of the aid.  This is the point at which ALC will start
to back off the drive power.  I find this works very well for me in most
cases.  I did have one amp which was very, very picky about grid current and
so had to have my XYL watch the grid meter as I adjusted the ALC but that is
the only time I've had to do that.  Right now I am using the Ameritron
ALS-600 solid state amp and don't run ALC at all since I make sure the audio
out of my rig is high quality and just run for max smoke.
