The first modernized tram, the PCC:
In the United States the directors general of
twenty-five tramway companies, disturbed by their
dwindling profits, named a "Presidents' Conference
Committee," which had the mission of designing a
better tram. After careful research, the committee
was able to demonstrate in 1934 the first PCC tram.
It was smooth, well suspended, and very comfortable.
A new kind of controller, operated by a pedal,
provided
stupendous acceleration, superior to anything
available
on any other street vehicle. Its powerful motors
gave the vehicle a maximum speed of 43 miles per
hour, and the braking system, actuated by a pedal,
was smooth and very efficient.
The transmission through a conic spiroidal gear
train was noiseless, and the insertion of rubber
blocks in the wheels made them incredibly silent.
Almost all sophisticated modern trams go back to
the PCC. They were manufactured under license by
FIAT in Italy, by Le Brugeoise in Belgium, and by
CKD-Tatra in Czechoslovakia, which exports them
to all parts of the Soviet Union.
So advanced was the design of the PCC that the only
recent improvement has been the introduction of
electronic controls instead of the original and
rather complex system of electromechanical solenoid
switches.
