You have a good point here, but I have used the LDG AT11MP auto-tuner with
something as simple as a zip-cord long-wire antenna.  All I did was put a
4-1 balun in line with the antenna and the tuner, and it tuned up fine.  I'm
willing to bet that you could do the same thing with an antenna fed by
ladder-line or even 300-ohm twin-lead for that matter.
