Optical mice are a strange breed to say the least. I too had a similar
situation where I didn't touch the mouse and the cursor moved all over the
screen by itself which I thought was quite odd.
What I did find is the mouse pad was multicolored and the optics were
receiving and sending signals that caused the cursor to move by itself. I
have since changed the pad and all is well. If the mouse pad is a neutral
like gray, it seems to behave nicely. You may want to try putting it on a
piece of paper to see if the symptoms go away.
