Has anyone seen the latest Scientific American magazine? Called "A New Look
at Evolution" it looks at many aspects of the evolution of our species. I
found it quite interesting.

One relevant topic to our list is the opinion of some researchers that Homo
erectus began cooking food perhaps 1.8 million years ago and that the
cooking of starchy tubers increased their energy content and enabled the
species to develop larger brains. However, the article goes on to say that
while there is evidence of fires 1.6 to 1.4 million years ago, it is not
clear whether they were controlled by pre-humans. The earliest unequivocal
use of fire is only 200,000 years ago.

The article I was really disappointed in was the one about diet. It looks
like political correctness has struck again. They conclude that while our
skulls are suited to eating meat and it has been proved to be a large part
of the diet of the Neanderthals and other early peoples, it now doesn't
matter what we eat as long as we don't eat too many calories and make sure
to get enough exercise.
