Ended up replacing her HDD, got her system restored, and
brought the old HDD home to hook as a slave on one of our
other PCs in an effort to recover the data (it's been ages
since she had backed this drive up). When I start my
machine, the black bootup screen shows her drive as the
slave on IDE-0 and identifies it correctly. However,
after Windows starts, you don't see the drive at all when
you go to Windows Explorer.
Anybody out there know how I can get her data back for her
without spending oodles for data recover software or
professional services?

Can you boot to DOS and see data on the drive? I would
try that first.
Then depending on the value and quantity of data needing
recovering, you may want to look at:
http://www.ontrack.com/easyrecovery/
They have varying pricing on packages from $89 to $499
with a free demo to see what files it can detect before
you buy.
Another software solution for $69 that allows you to see
what can be recovered before buying is:
http://www.runtime.org/gdb.htm
GetDataBack for FAT.
The download will let you look at the files that it can
recover before you have to register.
