My dear colleagues,
I badly and desperately in need of your help regarding this issue. We have
students with severe dyslexia. They are taking Developmental reading
classes. The Instructors and the Chair of the Language Department refused
to provide accommodation such as assistive technology softwares(e.g. Test
Talker, Kurzweil 3000 or any with text to voice or voice output (whether
human or hardware) to administer the tests/quizzes because , according to
them, they are testing the reading skills of the students. All they want to
do is read the Instructions to the student. Despite of advocating for the
said technology, and informing them that these technologies are used in US
mainland postsecondary institutions, they fail to provide accommodations to
the students. The Instructors and Chair of the Department would like to hear
from US postsecondary Institutions that this kind of accommodation are used
in the US mainland. Also, they need any documentation that will support such
use. However, I keep trying to accommodate them by improvising low technology
or no technoloy at all.Again, they refuse to do so.
Any help will be highly appreciated. Thank you very much. Best regards.
Sincerely,
Celia B. Lamkin,M.D.
