The "real" yam, or what is called yam outside of USA, is a big
tuber often 15-20 cm in diameter and 40 cm or more in length.
There are lots of different kinds of that yam, I do not know
if any is orange in color.
I think the one you describe is a variant or relative of the
sweet potato.
