  I believe that this was one of the defects of the original IDE (one
channel, two devices) that was corrected as part of EIDE (two channels, two
devices each).  Around the same time, malers of slow devices such as CD-ROM
drives started putting fast *interfaces* on them so they wouldn't slow down
hard drives, even on old IDE controllers.
