Technical Program Description:
Paint is one of the most common components in both new construction and
restoration work. This workshop is intended to provide participants with an
insight into the fundamentals of modern paint technology. The primary focus
will be on how they are formulated and how they work, including ingredient
alternatives and how each ingredient influences application and perfomance
properties.

Using the example of an acrylic latex masonry coating, the workshop will
cover topics in ingredient selection, production, color-matching, Quality
Control methods and perfomance properties. Alternative technologies such as
cementitious and inorganic mineral coatings will also be discussed. Physical
examples of various materials and demonstrations of several of the
laboratory methods discussed will augment the presentations. The technical
program will be presented by members of the staff of Edison Coatings, Inc.,
a manufacturer of custom coatings for masonry and concrete substrates.

In-House Program:
Private tours of the Mark Twain House (1880) will be conducted by Wayne
Gannaway, Curator of Historic Properties. In the course of the tour, Mr.
Gannaway will show examples of how paint analysis has been critical to the
restoration work performed at the house, both in matching paint colors and
in building archaeology research. Issues surrouding the decision to use
modern replacement materials will also be discussed.

This event is sponsored in part by Edison Coatings.
The program cost includes morning coffee, box lunch and the house tour as
well as the technical program.
