All - to quantify my situation:  I want to add a 128 MB chip to my HP Pavilion model 8490.  It is plugged into a surge protector and a printer.  After reading the messages here about static electricity and shock, I think I'm going to go the rank amateur route and unplug everything.  Seems to be the safest way.
