I don't know if this will help, but I had a very similar set of errors and constant crashes
recently. (WinME, AMD 1 gig, 128 MB ram). Turned out I had configured my virus scan program to 'scan
all files' instead of 'program files only'. I fought with my machine for days until I remembered
that one simple change I had recently made. Once I reconfigured my virus scan program, the problem
seemed to disappear - so far. hth
