Switch to Mac OS X or Unix.

Seriously, it is a Windows annoyance and didn't totally disappear with
Windows 2000 and Windows XP, but it is better. Many times it will be a
conflict between the network adapter and either the sound or video adapters
when explorer tries to browse the network. The best thing you can do is
upgrade from ME to anything, then run Microsoft's BootVis.exe (available at
www.microsoft.com) to prevent drivers from loading before windows fully
starts. You can try to change the priority level for Explorer in Task
Manager, but I haven't seen any improvement from this.

To get your desktop back when this happens, Enter Ctrl+Alt+Delete to get to
task manager and select New Task (Run) and type "explorer" (without quotes).
Some icons may be still missing from the system tray but you will have most
of your functionality restored.
